National Trust: Greenway
The National Trust House ‘Greenway’ can be found just a short boat trip up the River Dart. This iconic 1950s styled house was the place where Agatha Christy spent many holidays, with the Boathouse, set at the foot of the stunning grounds, being the scene of her crime book ‘Dead Man’s Folly’. Accredited by the International Camellia Society as a ‘Garden of Excellence’, this magical, mysterious house and gardens are really well worth a visit.
Totnes & Surrounding Areas
The market town of Totnes is also 7 miles away, hosting regular markets and home to a number of historic buildings and monuments, including Totnes Castle, a legacy to the power of the Normans. Stroll through the narrow streets browsing, take a trip on the South Devon Railway on a steam train, or visit the Sharpham Vineyard and Cheese Dairy. The options are endless.
Seaside Towns
The towns of Kingsbridge and Salcombe are also a short drive away and offer a variety of local crafts shops and cafes, as well as the wonderful Salcombe Dairy for ice creams, the Salcombe Gin Distillery, a must for any gin enthusiast, and the sweet shop heaven of Cranche’s!
Blackpool Sands Beach
The coastline too in South Devon is vast. Just 6 miles from the cottage is the glorious sheltered shingle bay of Blackpool Sands. With summer lifeguards and the Venus Cafe, this beach has great facilitiess and crystal clear water.
South Milton Sands
Further afield, but well worth the drive is South Milton Sands. Just 14 miles away, this vast course sand beach is perfect for paddle boarding or kayaking, or simply taking in the amazing sunsets from the famous Beachhouse Café. Hope Cove
My all time favourite, and go to destination however has to be Hope Cove. Nestled between Thurlstone and Salcombe, Inner and Outer Hope are where holiday dreams are made. Whether walking across the cliff paths, paddling in the small calm coves, or enjoying a fresh local cider at the Hope and Anchor Pub, this beautiful village is a Devon treasure.
Countryside Walks
Aside from the towns and beaches, Higher Dinnicombe Cottage is the perfect starting point for some wonderful undulating walks. With a footpath at the top of the driveway, you can look across to Dartmoor and the sea out at Torquay, and head for 50 minutes to the estuary pub The Maltsters at Tuckenhay. The fabulous Ferry Boat Inn, or FBI at Dittisham can also be reached by foot. With incredible views en route towards Brigham and beyond on the hill behind Capton, both footpath walks are highly recommended, and a quiet word with your host may even result in a car ride back!
Tee Off!
We are also perfectly located for all golf enthusiasts! As you come down the drive, you will pass the 13th and 14th holes of the Championship Course at Dartmouth Golf Club. With the entrance just 2 miles around the corner, this course has been designed to challenge the most proficient of golfers, with plenty of water features and undulating greens.
The founding father of the PGA, J H Taylor, designed the course at Bigbury Golf Club. Founded in 1923 and just 15 miles away, this remarkable cliff top course provides stunning views across to Burgh Island, as well as the challenges of sea winds.
To complete your golfing break, why not take in Thurlstone Golf Club. With a mixture of links and cliff-top terrain, this Harry Colt designed course is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The perfect finale to your golfing challenge.
